Decision-making tool to help the marine industry in the Arctic region

With Arctivities, NOVELTIS has developed an operational and innovative decision making tool to provide unique risk indicators linked to sea security for operations in the Arctic region, such as: Oil and gas, fishing, marine transportation, marine renewable energy sector, etc., as well as their impact on environment and biodiversity.

The development of human activities in the Arctic region (oil and gas, fishing, marine transportation, marine renewable energy sector, etc.) is creating associated environmental risks for fishing aquaculture and biodiversity.
A classification and a risk assessment of potential sites are necessary to support the aquaculture and fisheries sectors and enhance the security for all maritime activities and operations in the region.

Our service takes into account the following constraints: the Fishing and aquaculture industries, the implementation of the Directive establishing a framework for maritime spatial planning, the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the adaptation to climate change.

Means used

NOVELTIS has developed an operational service providing risk indicators:

  • Statistics (extreme and normal): Sea state conditions, ice, temperature and salinity, etc.
  • Forecasts: Wave conditions, icing conditions, ice, etc.
  • Ambient noise and noise forecast (in partnership with Quiet-Oceans).

Results

Our ARCTIVITIES operational service is supplied hourly and updated daily. The updating frequency of our unique indicators is of 6 h for meteorological information and 24h for marine parameters.
