Erosion and Accretion estimation on mediteranean coasts

NOVELTIS has developed a unique model allowing the precise estimation of erosion and accretion of the beaches of the municipality of Six-fours-les-plages, by integrating sediment dynamics as well as several wind and wave forcing scenarios.

Within the framework of an environmental study, aiming to study the management of the Posidonia stocks (a plant witnessing the good health of the coast and a major player in the fight against erosion), NOVELTIS was responsible for the development of a new sediment modeling solution in Six-Fours-les-Plages bay for different beaches subject to accretion and erosion phenomena. This new solution allows to establish a diagnosis and balances of volume of sediment transported according to different conditions of swell and wind.

Evolution of the sedimentary bottom obtained with the new NOVELTIS modeling solution (m)

Several forcings may have an influence in mediteranean beaches erosion. NOVELTIS has built a specific 2D hydrosedimentary model for this project, taking into account waves and sediment transport modelling.

Means used

  • Elaboration of a new modelling chain with sediment-swell coupling at fine scale

Results

The evolution of the erosion and accretion levels has been analysed at several points distributed over the beaches of the bay, thanks to our new modelling solution. Sediment export and import volumes were also estimated on the basis of the various simulations carried out. Several wind and swell conditions have been modelled and analysed.
