Operational forecasting system for ice thickness on the Baltic Sea

NOVELTIS has implemented for one of its clients Oil & Gas a unique service for the 4-week sea ice and meteorological-ocean forecasting for the recommendation of ship selection, based on the ice classification in the Baltic Sea.

The choice of an ice-breaking vessel to link a Baltic port in winter should take into account the maximum ice thicknesses likely to be encountered on the route or on arrival at the final port. In the context of supplying refineries and consumer markets in the Nordic countries, our client needed a reliable and accurate decision support tool for selecting the appropriate type of vessel in a sea with a high level of icing.

Project details

The choice of an ice-breaking vessel to link a Baltic port in winter should take into account the maximum ice thicknesses likely to be encountered on the route or on arrival at the final port. In the context of supplying refineries and consumer markets in the Nordic countries, our client needed a reliable and accurate decision support tool for selecting the appropriate type of vessel in a sea with a high level of icing.

Means used

The service had to be based on the state of the art sea ice databases, including multi-source operational forecasts and satellite observations.
  • New and accurate sea ice climatology built and validated by NOVELTIS
  • Multi-year database of model results
  • Based on a statistical method developed by NOVELTIS
  • Daily estimate of sea ice thickness
  • Consideration of interannual variability in sea ice dynamics

Results

The information provided by this service has been rigorously validated with marine experts over the past seasons. Today, our client benefits from a secure web mapping interface that is constantly updated with our unique forcasts and recommendations. This service has been delivered since 2013 via a subscription for the entire ice season.
