Tool for tidal energy assessment

A service for tidal energy potential assessment in the Global Ocean

TidEA, for Tidal Energy Assessment, is the first worldwide tool intended for the general public and the relevant stakeholders of the maritime and the marine renewable energy sectors.
Thanks to its solid expertise in the development of tidal atlases for space agencies, NOVELTIS has developed this unique decision making system for the Marine Renewable Energy industry.
The Copernicus Marine Service (CMEMS) of the European Commission provides regular and systematic reference information on the physical state and dynamics of the ocean and marine ecosystems for the global ocean and the European regional seas.
The estimates of the global potential of the tidal energy generation vary but it is widely agreed that the tidal stream energy capacity could exceed 120 GW globally. However, until TidEA, no tool provided global maps of relevant indicators and enabled to quickly identify favorable sites for the exploitation of tidal energy. Starting from this user need, NOVELTIS developed and promoted its tidal energy downstream service: TidEA.

To characterize the tidal energy resource at a global scale with relevant indicators (Maximum current speed, tidal power density, etc.).

Means used

NOVELTIS used the tidal currents from its global tidal atlas, validated against in situ tide gauge observations and satellite altimetry data, to compute the indicators that enable a first level of tidal energy assessment:

  • Maximum current speed
  • Percentage of time when the current speed is higher than given thresholds (1.5 m/s, 3 m/s)
  • Average Power Density

These indicators were computed along the world coastline and are available in the shallow areas, where the bathymetry is lower than 100 meters.

Results

Thanks to its solid expertise in the development of tidal atlases for space agencies and the use of CMEMS products, NOVELTIS has developed a unique decision making system.
